From 29 June 29 to 1 July 2022, St. Petersburg hosted the 10th Anniversary St. Petersburg International Legal Forum. For the first time, the Roscongress Foundation became a co-organizer of the forum. The event brought together many leading domestic and foreign legal practitioners and academicians.
Alexander Grebelsky, Managing Partner of the firm, spoke at the session “Arbitrators — who are they?”. The discussion was dedicated to the tribunals formation and the requirements to arbitrators at the present stage of the sanctions war.
In his speech, Alexander touched upon the neutrality as a “forgotten” criterion that should be taken into account when appointing arbitrators. First of all, this criterion answers whether the nationality of the arbitrator does not coincide with the nationality of the parties to the dispute. Conventionally, the arbitrator is neutral only when he acts in accordance with the principle of “relative reversibility” (so his attitude towards the parties will not change depending on the change in their nationality).
Among the speakers of the session are the leading Russian and foreign international arbitration experts: Professor Alexey Kostin (ICAC at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation), Yulia Mullina (Russian Arbitration Center), Dmitry Dyakin (Rybalkin, Gortsunyan, Dyakin and Partners), Kirill Udovichenko (Monastyrsky, Zyuba, Stepanov & Partners), Natalya Zaitseva (Power Machines), Lev Gershanok (Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation), Daniel Brantes (Brazilian Center for Arbitration and Mediation), Francis Xavier (Rajah & Tann Singapore).
The session was moderated by Mikhail Demin, the Head of the International Legal Direction of the VEB.RF.
